Rural India Hospital Project (RIHP) first started in 1964 as an American India Dispensary (AID) Trust,
with a working capital of Rs 10,000 for administering the Trust.
The following persons were the first Trustees of the Board:

By a supplemental Trust agreement in 1976, AID was changed to a Not for Profit Charitable Corporation and renamed as Rural India Hospital Project (RIHP) Trust. The Deed of Trust was further amended for satisfying the provision of Income Tax Act and RIHP was made as a Public Charitable Trust. In 1993 Consolidated Coffee Ltd, Pollibetta entered in to an agreement with RIHP Hospital managing the hospital as a part of its CSR and community engagement program. On acquisition of Consolidated Coffee Ltd. by the Tata Coffee Ltd. (TCL), Pollibetta, the management of RIHP hospital is passed on to TCL The Managing Director of Tata Coffee Ltd. is the Chairman of the RIHP Trust.
RIHP hospital is registered under the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments Act (KPME).
RIHP is a referral hospital recognized under the Plantation Labour Act as a Primary Health Care Centre.
