Anaesthesiology

Anaesthesia plays the pivotal role for the smooth functioning of the surgical and medical disciplines. The cordial functioning thus created is a big asset for any modern hospital. The department of Anaesthesiology at RIHP Hospital is entirely devoted to providing active Peri-operative care to patients from various specialty departments like General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology and ENT. The department functions round the clock and runs a pre-anaesthetic clinic providing regular pre-anaesthesia evaluation and optimization of patients.

The department is fully equipped for providing Pain & Palliative care services and Labour analgesia.

The department maintains fully functional major Operation Theatres and a minor Operation Theatre. Theatres are equipped with latest anaesthesia workstations with multiparametric monitors with the facility to monitor anaesthesia gas concentration and end tidal CO2. The department is also equipped with instruments like nerve stimulator and USG

Types of anesthesia provided depend on the patient’s medical status and type of procedure, and includes

  • General Anaesthesia
  • Regional Anaesthesia
  • MAC (Monitored Anaesthesia Care)
  • Nerve Blocks


Anaesthesia & Critical care unit headed by senior Anaesthesiologist who is specialised in critical care medicine. The team members are well trained to cater to all kinds of surgeries, in all surgical specialties. In both the Operation Theatres, a member of the anaesthesia team will be with the patient throughout the procedure. After the procedure, the patient will be moved to the recovery room and a nurse will monitor the patient and provide medication under guidance of Anaesthesiologist, to minimize pain and other issues if any, including control of Blood pressure, nausea, vomiting as needed. Then the patient will be discharged from recovery room on advice by anaesthetist when he is stable and comfortable. In cases, necessitating more intense post-operative care patients will be managed in postoperative ICU along with the primary physician till the patient reaches the point where he may be safely managed in the ward or room.

The department follows standard safe operating protocols throughout the pre-operative, intra-operative and post- operative period.
